Five Thing Friday

  1. I came down with another sinus cold this week.  4 days before the half.  Now I’ll get to run 13.1 miles with a sore throat and a cough.  Yippee!  Blech.  I stayed home from work on Thursday, the day after the sore throat started.  Usually, I wait til I’m really sick to stay home, but I think biting the bullet right away did me some good.  While I don’t feel 100%, I never really dipped below 70%, so that’s better than most times I’m sick.
  2. Reba is doing pretty well.  She does not like being left alone all day, and I feel bad, but we gotta work.  My neighbors revealed on Sunday when I ran into them that she’s been barking a lot during the day.  Since we’re not there, it’s really difficult to fix.  When we are there, she barks randomly at noises in the stairwell, but just one bark at a time – not excessive at all.  We know that she whines a lot for the first 5 or so minutes after we leave (it’s the saddest, sorriest whine).  We stopped crating her in the bedroom and started gating her in the kitchen.  I think she’s happier there, but now our kitchen looks deserted.  We have a wine rack with no glasses or wine in it because she’ll chew anything when left alone.  We also bought an anti-barking device that gets in today.  Apparently, it emits a high pitched, only dogs can hear, noise when it detects barking.  Hopefully that works!  We don’t have the money to cover the mortgage and doggy day care.
  3. I made out pretty well for my birthday.  Mostly gift cards, which is sort of annoying.  I’m so indecisive that I ask for, say, bathroom accessories in white, so that way someone else can pick them out.  Instead, I got a gift card to Bed, Bath and Beyond.  I bought white and clear bathroom stuff with rope and twine accents.  Finally, the bathroom is a grown up bathroom, not half dinosaur (not that I didn’t love the dinosaurs).
  4. I’m actually doing well in Fantasy Football this year — Devonta Freeman was the best decision I ever made.
  5. October is the best!  This was just on my walk to work in front of the prettiest church I’ve ever seen!  wpid-20151016_081120.jpgwpid-20151016_081216.jpg

Five Thing Friday

  1. Dog update – On Sunday, we’re going to the organization’s monthly adoption event where we hopefully find out new family member.  We did drive out an hour and half to meet one dog earlier this week.  She was the sweetest little thing – playful, but cuddled up with us right away.  Alert, and cute, and tough and fun.  BUT, she was a pitbull (+ $744 in insurance per year) and she had a lot of food allergies (+ $300 in prescription food per year) and she chases/attacks small dogs (thinks they’re bunnies!).  The dog thing is really just something that needs more training and socialization, but all 3 things combined added up to “not the right fit for us.”  But, I have to say I’m a little heartbroken.  She felt like my dog.
  2. We’re mostly settled into the new place.  FH doesn’t want over the door shoe racks everywhere which left be with 50+ shoes just chillin on the floor.  There’s a built-in thing meant for a TV (see pics in #3) that we were going to put shelves in and have my shoes on display.  However, it was a weird size and even the cheapest particle board shelves were going to cost upwards of $70, so we gave up on that idea and bought a free-standing shoe rack.  I totally regret not buying the taller one because I still have a bunch of shoes under my desk at work.  But oh well.  Here it is in all it’s glory.
  3. In our old place we had 1 dresser in the bedroom and 1 in the second bedroom and we each got half of each one (that was a confusing sentence!).  This time around, I conceded that FH could have his full dresser back and I’d take my full dresser.  I promptly realized that my dresser’s drawers were smaller and so is my closet (my old one was just 8′ of hanging space in the 2nd room along the wall — at least now I have an actual closet).  Sooooo, I had to find space for my overflow.  Here’s the built in thing where my shoes were supposed to go, except now it’s holding a cheap wire cube storing running stuff and sweatshirts.  Such a hot mess.
  4. And another storage hassle.  We have no bathroom storage and no linen closet, but we did have an extra bookcase.  I “transformed” this into a linen closet that sits in the living room just outside the bathroom door by adding curtains to it.  Yeah, it looks pretty tacky, but not as tacky as the BJ’s sized box of denture cleaner for my retainers sitting out in the living room.
  5. And we’ll end on some good things!  Haha.  Because my hanging clothes moved into an actual closet instead of hanging over my dresser, I gained the whole top of my dresser back.  I used a cute basket made of newspaper to hold all my nailpolish stuff… and I used some organizational trays I had left over to hold my sunglasses.  I found 3 pairs when I was packing which was awesome because I recently broke one pair and left on at my dad’s house.  sunglasses (and glasses in general) are amazing – doesn’t everyone look better in them?  Yes.  The answer is yes.

Five Thing Friday

  1. I’ve learned a lot about tendons, shin splints, muscles, running, recovery, etc.  I didn’t realize how much until someone in my office started coming to me for advice.  She’s doing a Couch to 5K plan and starting having a little bit of shin pain.  Of course, I jumped into a frenzy of action because, if there’s one thing I’ve learned, little things untreated become lingering things that require weeks of rest.  I brought in compression socks for her, told her to get fitted for new shoes, sent her exercises to prevent shin splints, and told her to ice after her run.  She has a toddler and doesn’t really have time to sit down and ice, at which point I realized neither do I.  FH happens to have 2 ice packs with a velcro strap.  I strap these bad boys on when I get out of the shower and leave them on the whole time I’m getting ready.  It’s like really cold ankle weights.  It’s totally convenient and works really well!
  2. Here’s a nice read from Thought Catalog: What Running A Half Marathon Taught Me About Body Image.
  3. I’m still struggling with sports bras.  My tits are tiny, but they still jiggle a little and need support.  My rib cage/chest is really wide.  I had one sports bra in a Size Small that literally constricts my breathing, so I’d been buying Mediums to remedy that situation.  But I’m finding that after a handful of washes, and particularly after long runs this summer (by which I mean, really sweaty ones), they aren’t actually supporting my boobs.  So, I’ve been trying on a lot of Smalls to try to find ones that are better and I’ve succeeded somewhat.  THIS ONE ($20) from Target works really well once I adjust the straps.  THIS ONE ($30)from Asics felt like I was wearing a bathing suit top – will be returning it.  Just saying, you don’t have to spend all the money.
  4. Dog Update Alertdog animated GIF  – No dog yet, but we are fully approved to adopt.  Now we just have to meet some more and decide on one!  Unfortunately our home insurance does not cover homes with “bully breeds” (FU Metlife) which is total bullshit and perpetuates the cycle of abused and neglected pitbulls littering the shelters.  UGH.  Anyway, we think it’ll end up costing about $600 extra per year to adopt a pitbull because we’ll have to switch to a more expensive auto and home insurance package through a different company (shout out to Liberty Mutual).  We’ll see.  Financially speaking, we should just get a different breed, but the more I learn about the obstacles people face in adopting them, the more I want to save one.
  5. Because we had the adoption agency home visit, we had to unpack, so it’s starting to feel more like home.  We just need a couch.  Still no dice on selling the thing.  Price is down to $500 and I’ve been targeted by at least two money order scams.  Also, try as I might to contain my stuff, our 2nd bedroom is still MY bedroom and I feel bad that I have a whole section of the house essentially to myself, while more of my stuff is still dispersed throughout.  Why do I have so much stuff?!?!  On a positive note, I’m diggin the laundry in the kitchen AND THIS VIEW:

    my phone takes shitty pictures

seriously this was 10x more amazing in person

Five Thing Friday

  1. I don’t think that we’ll ever get unpacked!  Getting home at 6 and cooking dinner/running errands and doing physical therapy leaves little time AND our weekend is chock full of stuff!  I live in squalor.
  2. Speaking of the weekend, tonight’s my fantasy football draft.  4 or 5 years ago when I joined the league I did a ton of research, drafted decently, and finished 6 out of 10.  Not good, but not terrible for my first go-round.  Turns out that was my peak.  I LOVE football.  I watch football every weekend it’s on.  But for some reason, I can never remember football.  Even Patriots games or players.  I have ZERO football memory.  That’s actually why I started playing fantasy – to help with that – but it hasn’t worked.  I’ve just sucked at fantasy football.  I kept Lamar Miller this year in the 4th round.  In the words of our best man, “Who.  THE FUCK.  is LAMAR MILLER????”  The point is I’m terrible and I’ve narrowly escaped the loser’s trophy 2 years in a row (after having won it once).
  3. Tomorrow I have a bridal shower to go to.  The couple registered at Crate and Barrel, so I went on last week and ordered my gifts on Thursday 8/20.  As of yesterday morning, they were still preparing for shipment.  I tried calling on Wednesday, but the estimated wait time was 22 minutes.  Fuck that.  Yesterday, I called, waiting 7 minutes, and was hung up on/disconnected right when it sounded like I was going to get to speak with someone.  I was about to blast them on Facebook when the live chat box popped up and I thought, sure, why not?  After I pointed out that other retailers can get me stuff within 24 hours and I was going to have to show up to a bridal shower sans present, the customer service agent was able to overnight my purchase and it should be waiting for me when I get home.  While I was majorly annoyed that they didn’t ship in the first place, I was impressed that the employee was empowered to do that for me.
  4. Tomorrow night I’m helping my friend move.  She the most enthusiastic, energetic person I’ve ever met and has essentially been an energizer bunny every time I’ve had to move, so I totally owe her one…even though it means delaying unpacking even longer.
  5. To round out my weekend plans, Sunday is very exciting.  We’re going to an adoption event to meet some dogs!  We just submitted our application to adopt this week, so we’re not approved, yet.  They have to check references and do a home visit, first.  But we’ll be able to see if we’re interested in any of the dogs they currently have and update our application with a preference.  I’M SUPER EXCITED!!!

Oh, and Comcast is installing cable and internet that day, too.
