Gear Review: Triwonder Hydration Vest

I bought this running hydration pack so that I could bring my kindle with me.  Not to run with (duh!) but to read at a coffee shop and then run home.  I also figured that having one would come in handy for marathon training…should I start doing that.  It was one of the cheapest available on Amazon Prime at $40 (which seems like a lot, actually).

What I failed to realize was that I really wanted a running backpack, not a hydration pack.  BUT, when I searched for “running backpack” most of the results were hydration packs and the ones that weren’t looked bulky.  Then I just figured that carrying around extra water isn’t a bad thingExcept it kind of is.  Gives a whole new meaning to water bra having 2 water bottles basically zip tied to your boobs.

As far as fit goes, there are a TON of adjustments you can make.  The front straps move up and down vertically to account for a variety of body shapes.

It carries a lot.  There’s enough space in the backpack part for a kindle, washcloth, bottle of body wash (yes, I stopped at Target to run errands mid-run), and some other small items.  It only has one zipper pocket, though, and that’s on the front left in front of the water bottle.  So, that’s where I keep my phone, keys and credit cards.

No doubt about it, running with a backpack and water boobs takes some getting used to.  It’s heavier, louder (water sploshing around), and hotter (serious back sweat).  But, it’s also useful and fairly inexpensive compared to some name brands.  So, I give it a 3.5 out of 5.

Sunday Runday 7/3

SUMMARY

  • Run 3x per week
    • Total Mileage = 11 miles
  • Yoga 2x X
  • PT 2x
  • Boot Camp
  • Avg 1350 calories/day X
    • 1538 calories/day

WORKOUTS

  • Monday 6/27 – PT
  • Tuesday 6/28 – 4 mile run [10:57 pace] – Much better than my 12 min pace on 6 miles the other day, but I missed my sister.
  • Wednesday 6/29 – PT + Boot Camp
  • Friday 7/1 – 3 mile run [10:57 pace] + Rock Climbing – My body is SO sore from boot camp that every step of that run was a struggle.  Rock climbing was fun, but scary.  I didn’t go up all the way because I didn’t like falling.  I think I like bouldering more than top-roping.
  • Sunday 7/3 – Arm Sculpting Challenge + 4 mile run [10:48 pace] – Arm challenge starts off easy.  Running is never easy.  It was so fucking hot out.

GOALS

  • Run 3x
  • PT 2x
  • Arm Sculpting Challenge
  • Yoga 2x
  • Average 1350 calories/day
  • Boot camp

    • Total Mileage = 11.1 miles
  • Yoga 3x

  • Boot Camp
  • Avg 1350 calories/day X

    • I think I’ve decided to focus on eating healthy and working out, and not focus on the scale.  For the whole month of July.  Ahhh.  And just trust that my healthier habits will create the changes I want to see in my body, and accept that those changes might not change the scale.

WORKOUTS

  • Monday 6/20 – PT + Boot Camp
  • Tuesday 6/21 – PT + Yoga – I was planning on running today, but I woke up to thunderstorms.  I think I found the 1 type of weather I won’t run in.
  • Wednesday 6/22 – 2.77 mile run [10:51 pace] – …with negative splits!
  • Thursday 6/23 – 2.26 mile run [10:55 pace] + Post Run Yoga + Post Run Cool Down– That cool down video is 7 minutes long, and it’s the best (and quickest) yoga video I’ve done.  It hits all the right spots.  Unfortunately, she only ever posted 2 videos to YouTube – that one and a 4 minute pre-run warm up.
  • Saturday 6/25 – 6 mile run [11:59 pace] … with my little sister! – She’s visiting looking at colleges, and she’s a pole vaulter, so she’s a sprinter.  When I told her we’d be doing 12 minute miles, she looked at me with pity.  Then when I made her do 6 very hilly miles (she only runs on a track), she was not so mad about the slow pace.  hahawp-1467024315382.jpg

GOALS

  • Run 3x
  • PT 2x
  • Yoga 2x
    • One less yoga, because FH and I have a rock climbing date planned on Friday, so that takes the place of a workout.
  • Average 1350 calories/day
  • Boot camp

Sunday Runday 6/19

SUMMARY

  • Run 3x per week
    • Total Mileage = 10 miles
  • Avg 1350 calories/day X
    • No, but surprisingly close.  My average was 1450 calories per day.  And that was with a visit from the future inlaws that included a few dinners out, a brewery tour, and a cidery tour.
  • Weight = 134 lbs

WORKOUTS

  • Tuesday 6/14 – 2 mile run [15:00 min/mi pace] – I didn’t have time in the morning, so I tried to run with the dog after work.  It worked for ~0.5 miles…progress?
  • Thursday 6/16 – 5K in 27:56 [9:00 min/mi pace] – It was hotter out this time, and my friend who I usually use as a pacer ran waaaay too fast (26:31), so this was pretty good for having to pace myself.  At some point I REALLY need to stretch and PT.  I’m a broken record.  This is why I can’t have nice runs.
  • Saturday 6/18 – Pre-Run Yoga + 5 miles [11:23 pace] – Hey, I finally stretched!  Per usual, I found myself thinking, “Hey, I bet if I did this every day, I’d have way fewer injuries…hmmm.”  Also, high five me on 5 miles – farthest distance in quite awhile.

GOALS

  • Run 3x
  • PT 2x
  • Yoga 3x – I’m not going to force myself to do an hour of yoga.  BUT, I want to do it more regularly in smaller intervals.  So, even 15 minute videos on 3 days would be great.
  • Average 1350 calories/day
  • Boot camp
