Sephora Samples: Face & Hair Stuff

  • SEPHORA Collection Mud Mask Mattifying AND Purifying ($20)– |★★★☆☆| – Your typical mud mask.  Nothing to write home about (even though that is literally what I’m doing).
  • Tatcha Balanced Pore Perfecting Water Gel ($68) – |★★☆☆☆| Does not absorb quickly, but a little goes a long way.  I really don’t like ‘gel’ moisturizers.
  • Origins Ginzing Energy Boosting Moisturizer ($28)– |★★★★☆| Light moisturizer.  Absorbs quickly.  Smells like oranges…which I hate.
  • Murad Oil Control Mattifyer ($40) – |★★★★☆| I just realized that I never put this in my original order.  They must have run out of the Benefit Eyebrow Pencil and replaced it. This stuff is pretty cool.  It’s way too thick – feels like sunscreen – but my skin felt AMAZING after applying and it it definitely “mattifies”.  I don’t know that I would buy it because it’s so thick – I’d use up the bottle in no time.
  • Bumble & Bumble  Surf Foam shampoo and conditioner ($25 and $27) – |☆☆☆☆☆| I really didn’t like this at all.  It promises clean hair, soft to touch, a good base for beachy styles.  What it actually gave me was legit beach hair.  The kind that feels like straw, you can’t run your fingers through it, and it requires 2 deep conditioning treatments to get back to normal.

Makeup Monday: Money Spending Frenzy

This happens every few months or so. I drop a couple hundred dollars on things I don’t need. $50 of those dollars went to Sephora because they had a 5 free samples promo.  I’ve already tried all of the free samples, so those reviews are below, but first here’s what I actually spent money on.

  • Too Faced Sugar Pop Eye Palette ($36) – I have way too many neutral eyeshadow palettes and this looked like a good antidote.  Plus, it comes with a “glamour guide tutorial.”
  • Nails Inc. in London Court ($14) – Too much to spend on a nailpolish?  Absolutely.  Exactly enough to bring me up to free shipping?  You betcha!  It’s the perfect, opaque, pale pink/white color.

  • |★★★★☆| Caudalie Premiere Cru the Eye Cream ($99) – Eye cream.  Good.  Nothing worth $99 though.
  • |★★★☆☆| Clinique Cleanser, Exfoliant, and Lotion ($26) – Very mild 3 piece cleansing routine.  Mild, but drying.  I needed the lotion by the end.
  • |★★★☆☆| bareMinerals Lash Domination Volumizing Mascara ($19) – Somehow, something called both bare minerals AND domination seems a little at odds.  Lengthening, but not thickening.
  • |★★★★★| Bite Beauty Agave Lip Mask ($26) – LOVE THIS!  A mask that’s also a lipstick.  I’m wearing the Champagne color below and it’s gorgeous.
  • |★★☆☆☆| Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Water Foundation ($39) – Extremely liquidy, very sheer coverage.  Not my color or my cup of tea.  Though I will admit, non-matte foundations photograph better as evidenced below.

I am actually wearing all of the samples in this picture.

I’ll review my purchases soon.  As well as the Sephora PLAY! box I just got, which I forgot I was getting, and probably rendered this shopping spree unnecessary…oops.

Make Up Monday: Affordable Sephora Christmas List

This list couldn’t possibly include everything I want from Sephora (all pictures from, but here some of the things I can afford that I’ve been drawn to while shopping for others (and subsequently added them to my own Christmas list).

His & Hers Minimergency Kits ($14 and $16, respectively) – How cute would these be for the wedding?!  And how on earth do they have everything you’d need and still cost less than $20?!?!  Way to go, Sephora!  Seriously, the girl one has a tampon, breath freshener, sewing kit, double sided tape…the list goes on…and on…and on.

L’Occitane Almond Delights ($16) – This comes with a body wash, hand and body lotion, but under fancy names.  Literally, I had to read the description to figure out what the hell “milk concentrate” does.  BUT, who doesn’t love the smell of almonds and feeling fancy?  All for $16?  Sign me up!

Sephora Wishes Come True Palette ($15) – This is the same category as the Dreams palette I bought a few months ago and LOVE, LOVE, LOVE (seriously, I use it more than my Make Up For Ever palette and it costs $40 less).  So, I’d be pretty stoked to get the Wishes Come True palette which has less eyeshadow, but more variety of color, and has a pink blush plus two highlighters.

Deborah Lippmann Undressed Shades of Nude nailpolish set ($34) – Usually, I’m all about the bright, unexpected colors (think opaque, matte lime green), but lately I’ve been drawn to more neutral nails (maybe it’s the bride in me?).  I love this set of, which would make ombre neutral nails pretty easy.  THe name is pretty cute, too!

Make Up Monday – October Ipsy Bag

Pleather and gold bag – I actually threw this out.  It felt sticky and tacky and was much smaller than usual.

  • Nourish Organic Argan Face Serum ($24 for the full size) – I failed to realize that serum = oil (pre-coffee ingestion, so I think I’m forgiven?) and spilled some on my new white bathmat.  You have to hold this bottle upside down and turn over quickly in your hand.  It has no instructions, so I don’t know if I’m suppose to use this at bedtime, as a moisturizer, in the shower….IDK, I never use oils!  It smells nice, though.  lol
  • Beauty Without Cruelty Lotion ($12 for full size) – Pretty standard lotion.  Same as Lubriderm or anything like that.  They tell you on the back to add essential oils of your choice to make it scented which is pretty cool.
  • Aurora Gel Effect Nail Lacquer in Inky Dinky ($9) – Brownie points for a cool name!  Great dark color.  Good application and coverage.  However, I assumed “gel effect” meant that it doesn’t chip.  I was wrong.  Chips on the ends of each nail within an hour.  Will use top coat next time.
  • The Balm Meet Matte Hughes liquid lipstick in Committed ($17 for full size) – This sample is teeny tiny – which is good because I don’t like it.  Nice, inoffensive color, but I hate the drying liquid lipsticks.  They make my lips feel like rough patches of skin and they tend to fade out to a crispy line around the outside.  Trash.

new phone did not improve my selfie game

yeah, this is me trying to take a picture of lipstick…deal with it

  • Royal & Langnickel Medium Eye Shader ($3)- Apparently this company makes paint brushes AND make up brushes, which is a cool portfolio diversification.  I’m not picky about brushes – this one is fine.  I just wish it was smaller.

Total value if full size is $65 and I threw out both the lipstick and the bag itself.  Starting to consider canceling this subscription.  Especially with added dog expenses.
